Harry Potter has opened our eyes and minds to the world of magic schools and students with magical abilities. Below is a list of eight series with magical schools containing witches, wizards, and other folks, with compelling storylines and complex yet relatable characters.

FATE: THE WINX SAGA

SEASONS- 2| GENRE- YA, Dark Fantasy Drama

Fate: The Winx Saga is a live-action drama television series that is based on the animated show the Winx Club. Fate is about Bloom and other fairies attending Alfea, a magical boarding school in the Otherworld, where they must learn to master their enchanting powers while navigating love, rivalries, and the monsters that threaten their very existence. 

The main character Bloom is a fairy raised by human parents but finds her way to Alfea, where she must adjust to her status as a "Changeling"- a fairy raised by humans. New friendships and rivalries blossom at Alfea, but the students must unite to fight against the "Burned Ones," who can only be killed by the dragon flame which Bloom possesses. 

The series also features other main characters like Stella, a princess cum fashionista, Musa, a fairy who loves music, and Sky, a specialist student with a complicated past. 

LEGACIES

SEASONS- 4| GENRE-Supernatural Drama, Coming-of-age

Legacies is a spin-off of the famous Originals that is a spin-off of the Vampire Diaries. It follows the life of Hope Mikaelson tribrid (a being who is a vampire, werewolf, and also a witch). Hope Mikaelson is the daughter of the original hybrid, Klaus Mikaelson; she attends The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted along with the Saltzman twins, Lizzie and Josie, as well as other supernatural teens. Two teens arrive at the boarding school accidentally, raising suspicions but are soon thrown into the supernatural world. The students, who are a mix of vampires, witches, and werewolves, all navigate the challenges of teenage life. Despite their conflicts and issues, they band together to fight mythical and dangerous enemies for other worlds, folklore, including gods.

THE MAGICIANS

SEASONS- 5| GENRE- YA Magic Fantasy

Adapted from Lev Grossman's 2009 novel series of the same name, The Magicians is a unique and darker version of Harry Potter. The series follows Quentin Coldwater, who accidentally gets selected to join the "Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy," a private institution that teaches magic. Quentin soon learns that magic is real and begins training to become a magician, along with his friends Alice, Penny, Margo, and Eliot.

The students soon realize that their favourite childhood book, "Fillory," is real and isn't as rosy as it seems and that it actually poses a danger to humanity. They learn that magic is as deadly as it is fascinating as they discover the world of Fillory. And the author of Fillory is very different, dark, and overall bad news. The friends must use their magic to save Fillory from "The Beast," the show's main antagonist.

 VAMPIRE ACADEMY

SEASONS- 1| GENRE- Horror Fantasy

Vampire Academy is the second adaptation of the novel series by Richelle Mead, the first being the 2014 film of the same name. The series follows Lissa, a royal vampire, and her best friend cum protector, Rose. The series follows Rose and Lisa as they attend St. Vladimir's Academy, a school for young Moroi and Dhampirs. As they navigate romance, vampire politics, and ancient magic at their boarding school, the friends must also face threats from the bloodthirsty and undead Strigoi. The series explores themes of friendship, love, and loyalty.

 THE BUREAU OF MAGICAL THINGS

SEASONS- 2| GENRE- Children’s Drama 

The Bureau of Magical Things is an Australian drama about Kyra, a human teenage girl who accidentally discovers the world of magic and that she has magical powers. Kyra is thrown into the world of fairies, unicorns, elves, and other supernatural creatures.

Kyra learns that she is a Tri-Ling (a human with the powers of both fairy and elf) and must work to save the world against a threat to the human race, with her mythical friends who are all learning to control their powers under Professor Maxwell of the DMI (department of magical intervention). 

The Bureau of magical things is a fantasy adventure series with themes of friendship, self-discovery, and teamwork.

THE WORST WITCH

SEASONS- 4| GENRE- Children’s Fantasy, Magic Drama

Based on Jill Murphy's books, The Worst Witch is a British television series about Mildred Hubble, an ordinary human living a normal life until a broomstick crashes into her balcony. Before she knows it, she finds herself in Miss Cackle's Academy, a school for young witches, and nothing is ever the same. Mildred is a clumsy, accident-prone student who is often at odds with her strict and scary teacher Miss Hardbroom, who always keeps a watchful eye on her students. 

With a strong determination, a well-intentioned Mildred starts her training, but her clumsy personality leads to disastrous situations, and she is thus considered the worst student in the school. The series follows Mildred as she navigates life's challenges at the academy, including her studies, relationships with fellow students, and fitting in.

HEX

Seasons- 2| GENRE- Horror, Fantasy Drama

Hex is a British supernatural drama series that follows Cassie Hughes, who discovers that she is a witch and the world of magic and danger. Cassie, along with her fellow witches and a fallen angel named Azazel, learns to control her powers as dark forces threaten to use her powers for their means. Cassie learns to balance her normal life and her duties as a witch, along with navigating magical politics. Along the way, Cassie realizes that she possesses dangerous powers and discovers her past's dark secrets 

SUPERNATURAL ACADEMY

SEASONS- 1 GENRE- Animated, Werewolf drama

Supernatural Academy is an upcoming series adapted from the famous book by Jaymin Eve. The show follows birth twins and werewolves Mischa and Jessa, who were separated at birth and reunite at the Supernatural Academy, where Jessa has been living with her father. Mischa had no idea of the supernatural before coming to the academy but used to have visions of a strange door, wolves, and dragons, all of which she drew about in her notebook. Seeing that she can no longer hide her daughter's true nature, her mom enrols her in the Supernatural Academy. Despite their rocky start, the twins soon form an unbreakable bond that would help them fight against the dark forces seeking to resurrect the Dragon King.

 LITTLE WITCH ACADEMIA

SEASONS-2 GENRE- Coming-of-age Fantasy Magical Anime

Little Witch Academia is an anime series about a young girl name Akko Kagari who is inspired to become a witch after she attends a magic show and meets the famous witch Shiny Chariot. She enrolls in the “Luna Nova Magical Academy”, a school for witches, where she and her friends Lotte and Sucy go on adventures and learn about magic. Their journey in the school they encounter magical creatures and many challenges as Akko learns more about her magical heritage.

JUJUTSU KAISEN

Seasons- 1 GENRE- Adventure, Dark Fantasy, Supernatural Manga

Jujutsu Kaisen is an anime that follows a high school student Yuji Itadori, who has inherited special powers from his grandfather, a powerful exorcist. Yuji becomes involved in the world of jujutsu sorcerers who protect the living from cursed spirits, when his grandfather’s ghost appears to him and tells him about the existence of cursed spirits.

Yuji is recruited to attend the Jujutsu Tech high school, where he and his classmates learn how to use their powers to defeat cursed spirits and protect the world.
