I don't think there's anyone who hasn't watched Marvel's Thor, if not watched atleast heard of him and the movie. And many of us who have watched the movie were left wondering about the Norse God of Thunder (not Chris Hemsworth, but well😉) and his brother Loki, the God of mischief (again the character, not Hiddleston😉), the movies had many details about the Norse mythology but we were left wanting more. My fascination with Norse mythology started with Marvel's Thor, so much so that I watched all three movies in one go. Then I began reading and about it found so many differences between the mythology and movies, that when I began searching for other movies and series based on Norse mythology and found quite a few (not enough though🤷♀️).
So here's the list of movies and series based on Norse Mythology for all of us mythology lovers. Have at it....
(⚠ Spoilers ahead)
Ragnarok

Ragnarok is a Norwegian series, set in a small town in Norway where a family of giants who has survived Ragnarok reside. Enter Magne and his family of mother and brother who have unwillingly shifted to the town. Trouble starts when Isolde, Magne's only friend in the class dies, Magne becomes obsessed with finding out what really happened to her as the authorities write off her death as an accident. The giants soon find out who Magne really is, even though he isn't aware and try to kill him unsuccessfully.
As the seasons unravel we get to see many other characters from Norse Mythology like Loki, Odin, Frigg, Baldr and many more.
My favourite thing about this series is that it is well researched, especially Loki's heritage while many who watch Marvel movies believe him to be Thor's half-brother, according to the mythology he is Odin's half-brother as he mixes their blood.
The fact that it is set in a chilling yet beautiful part of Norway makes it more authentic. Ragnarok so far has 3 seasons and is apparently hearing up for the fourth.
Ragnarok- The Viking Apocalypse

Ragnarok is a 2013 Norwegian fantasy adventure film. Archaeologist Sigurd Svendsen studied the Vikings along with his wife, upon her death he continues the work despite repeated failures. But he makes a breakthrough when his co-worker Allan brings a stone tablet he found in Finnmark. Sigurd discovers that the Oseberg ship hides a secret from the Viking Age. So he along with his two children and Allan put embark on a quest to find the truth behind the Old runes carved on the rock. They meet Elisabet and Leif in Finnmark, they face many difficulties on their journey including betrayal by one of their own and a Sea serpent.
The film is a great watch for anyone who wants to watch a movie about Norse mythology filled with adventure. It's basically like the Nordic version of National Treasure with a sea serpent.
Mortal

Mortal is a Norwegian film with Eric (Nat Wolff) as the protagonist. Eric is an American of Norwegian descent. He is bullied by the local teenagers when returning from a clinic. They shove him despite his warnings and the kid who shoves Eric instantly drops dead. He is then arrested by Henrik, a police officer who then calls in psychologist Christina (Iben Akerlie) to evaluate Eric. Christina believes that his abilities are connected to his emotions and that Eric’s deadly touch can also heal. Eric can control the weather and he confesses to Christine about his past crimes and is arrested and it is decided to take him back to the US. Eric asks to be sedated on the helicopter ride but once the sedative wears off his powers cause a storm and the helicopter crashes. He saves an American agent, Hathaway but she begins to hunt him. The agent is afraid that Eric’s abilities will upend the globe, and prove that the world is worshipping the wrong god. Hathaway's hunt for Eric leads to a tragedy. Telling any more than I already have would give away the whole plot, so I'm going to stop here.
(P.S- There is an upcoming sequel to this movie.)
Valhalla- Legend of Thor

Viking Siblings Roskva and Tjalfe are forced to embark on a journey from Midgard (Earth) to Valhalla (hall of the fallen) with the gods Thor and Loki, who just appear in their yard and pick up the children. This is because Valhalla is threatened by the wolf Fenrir and the archenemies of gods, Giants. The siblings with the gods, fight to save Valhalla from the end of the world in Ragnarok.
The Northman
.jpeg)
The movie is about Amleth, a Viking prince who is on a quest to avenge his father. The film claims to be heavily influenced by Norse mythology.
The film is set in AD 895, when Amleth's father returns to the kingdom from an overseas conquest and declares Amleth his successor only to be murdered by his half-brother, Fjölnir, who also takes his wife captive. Amelth flees but promises revenge.
After roaming around with other nomadic Vikings, he learns that Fjölnir was overthrown by another king and is now living in exile. In his quest to fund Fjölnir, Amleth finds himself in the company of a woman named Olga, who claims to be a sorceress and also encounters a magician who tells him about Draugr, a magical sword at the Gates of Hel.
The movie has many twists and turns and is quite an adventure to watch.
Valhalla Rising

Valhalla Rising is set in 11th-century Scandinavia where One Eye (Mads Mikkelson), the protagonist is an undefeatable Viking warrior who is captured and locked up by a Norse chieftain. A little slave boy gives him food every day, and they form a bond and escape together.
They soon embark on a journey and accidentally end up in the new world (Canada).
The new world is not all that it seems as they soon discover dark secrets and the Vikings confront their fate. One-Eye soon learns that his fate was already written by the gods and discovers his true self.
Valhalla Rising was shot in the beautiful Scottish Highlands making the scenes in the new world a treat to the viewers' eyes.
The 13th warrior

This movie is based the novel "Eaters of the Dead" by Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park).
A Muslim diplomat is exiled for falling in love with the wrong woman, he then finds himself in the company of a group of rowdy Vikings, whose behaviour both baffles and offends him. However, they learn to coexist and soon they are informed that "The Wendals" (creatures of the mist) were attacking their homeland.
The Vikings are told by the Oracle that they must be accompanied by the thirteenth warrior to destroy the Wendals. The diplomat realizes that he is the thirteenth warrior, and even though he isn't happy with the news, he accompanies the Vikings to their homeland.
The Vikings along with their thirteenth warrior fight the Wendals in battle.
Loki
.jpeg)
After stealing the Tesseract during the events of Avengers: Endgame, an alternate version of Loki is brought to the mysterious Time Variance Authority (TVA), an organization that exists outside of time and space and monitors the timeline.
Loki is then offered a chance by TVA if he helped them in catching a murderer, which he does but soon realizes everything is not as simple as it looks. The plot line, the acting and the CGI everything is on point.
Honourable Mention
The Mask
.jpeg)
Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey), a bank employee stumbles upon a green wooden mask, when he wears it he turns into an eccentric and crazy green-skinned superhero who can bend reality.
It is later known that the mask was created by Loki, the Norse god of mischief and it contains his spirit. Ipkiss becomes a supernatural playboy and robs a bank under the mask's influence. This catches the attention of a crime lord, Dorian Tyrell (Peter Greene), who is angry as his goons are blamed for the heist.
The movie ends with Ipkiss throwing the mask in a river but there is a sequel to the movie, which isn't a great idea.
